FBA vs. MCF: Which Amazon Fulfillment Model Fits Your Store?
FBA fulfills your Amazon orders; MCF fulfills orders from your own website using the same inventory. Here's how they differ and when to use each.
Most sellers learn FBA first and assume it's the only way to use Amazon's warehouses. It isn't. Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) lets you store inventory in Amazon's network and have Amazon fulfill orders that come from your own website or other sales channels — not just the Amazon marketplace. Same shelves, different storefront.
The core difference
FBA fulfills orders placed on Amazon. MCF fulfills orders placed off Amazon using the same pooled inventory. You can run both at once from a single stock pool: a shopper who buys on Amazon.ca triggers FBA, while a shopper who buys on your branded site triggers MCF.
When FBA is the better fit
- Your demand is concentrated on the Amazon marketplace.
- You want the Prime badge and Amazon's buyer trust doing the converting.
- You're optimizing for best-seller rank and Amazon SEO.
When MCF earns its keep
- You're building a direct-to-consumer brand and want to own the customer relationship and the margin.
- You already sell on your own site and don't want to run a warehouse or pack boxes.
- You want one inventory pool serving multiple channels instead of splitting stock.
The trade-offs to weigh
MCF's convenience comes with details to manage. Per-unit fulfillment fees can be higher than rolling your own shipping at small volumes, and standard MCF boxes are Amazon-branded unless you opt into blank/branded packaging — something to consider if unboxing is central to your brand. There's also fulfillment speed to pick (standard vs. expedited) and inventory to keep synced so you don't oversell across channels.
Why we run both
At Novus Supply we sell direct and on Amazon from one inventory pool — Amazon ships the orders either way, so a customer on our site gets the same fast, reliable delivery as a customer on the marketplace. If you're still deciding whether Amazon fulfillment makes sense at all, start with our FBA beginner's guide, then model the per-unit economics with the FBA & MCF profit calculator before you commit inventory.
*MCF orders ship in plain or Amazon-branded packaging depending on the option you select; branded packaging may carry an additional fee.
