How to Choose the Right Sock Size (Men's & Women's Guide)

Sock sizing confuses almost everyone, because a sock's size and your shoe size aren't the same number. Get it right and a sock disappears on your foot; get it wrong and you spend the day tugging up a slouching cuff or cramming your toes into something too short. Here's how to choose correctly the first time.

Sock size vs. shoe size

The number printed on a sock (for example, "10–13") is the sock size, a measurement of the foot length the sock is knitted to fit — not your shoe size. Most brands publish a chart that translates your familiar shoe size into the right sock size. The two correlate, but they're measured differently, so always check the conversion rather than assuming they match.

How to measure if you're between sizes

1. Stand on a piece of paper and trace your foot, heel to longest toe.
2. Measure that length in inches or centimeters.
3. Match it to the brand's foot-length chart, and if you fall between two sizes, size up — a slightly larger sock is far more comfortable than one that's too tight.

A correctly sized sock keeps the heel pocket seated where it belongs, prevents bunching under the arch, and keeps the cuff from sliding down — the small irritations that make you notice your socks all day.
